| Saturday 8th September 2007 was the start of the season against Beverley Town Beavers at Bishop Burton College. South Cave United started well with early shots from Jack Hanson & Matt Friend but it was not one sided as Beverley Town Beavers broke several times trying to lob the ball over to their man-mountain centre forward. The first fifteen minutes carried on the same as David Tarbotton took a free kick wide of the post and Beverley Town Beavers shot over the bar. A second free kick by David Tarbotton was saved comfortably. Twenty minutes in saw the first goal as Beverley Town Beavers took advantage of a goalmouth scramble and a close offside decision to lead 1-0. Again the match swung both ways with South Cave United having more shots on goal and pressurising their opponents. This led to an amazing save by the Beverley Town Beaver defender who handballed the shot wide giving South Cave United another chance to go level. Matt Simpson took the penalty but the new boots were not working again and the shot went wide. After thirty five minutes David Wilson came off injured which subsequently led to a reshuffle in the team. Matt Simpson dropped back into defence and substitute Josh Hopkin stepped into the left midfield role, moving Kieran Barmby up front. Rob Mooney (having a 'mare as he put it) was later substituted for Courtney Tarbotton who stepped into a central midfield role. As a result Jack Hanson took the right wing back position. This altered the game and caused problems for Beverley Town Beavers who could not cope with the quick play from the younger players driving forward and the strong defence of Pete, Luke, Matt & Jack. The second half was much improved with an early South Cave United free kick by Matt Friend being defended and came out to David Tarbotton who lobbed the keeper to bring the score to 1-1. However, Beverley Town Beavers were not beaten as their free kick out wide left of the penalty area floated into the goal without a touch bringing the score to 2-1. South Cave United were still the better team with more shots from Matt Friend & even Pete Allison got in on the goalmouth action. With ten minutes to go the captain Paul Rackham showed his true colours. He led a charge towards the edge of the penalty area and gained a free kick after being brought down. David Tarbotton came forward to take the shot, which rebounded off the post and came to Jack (Scholes) Hanson on the edge of the area. Jack blasted the ball home to bring the teams level. This shook the home team and five minutes later Kieran, who had been working well up front, ran at the defence who were backing off, lobbed the ball to the back post where David Tarbotton was waiting to provide a diving header. This gave South Cave United the lead and an eventual win making the final score 2-3. Overall it was a very satisfying performance (although we need to make more of the set play opportunities) with all players giving one hundred percent. Luke Duerden claimed the Man of the Match for his role in centre half and winning every header against the opposition's man-mountain. A good start, well done! |
