| Saturday 15th September 2007 was the second game of the season against a good team of Reckitts Reserves away at the Police Sports Ground. Both teams started well with a midfield battle to gain control. South Cave United kept it tight and Reckitts Reserves played a high line with little opportunity for either side to break through. South Cave United seemed to get the edge by some good possession during the early part of the game from Jack Hanson, Rob Mooney and Paul Rackham supported by the new defending line up of Paul Rowe and Matt Simpson as centre halves. After fifteen minutes David Tarbotton shot from outside of the box followed by an attempt on goal by Kieran Barmby who was playing a central attacking role. Thirty minutes in and the game was still in deadlock as South Cave United continued to raise the pressure with a corner put wide. Half time score was 0-0. Reckitts Reserves came out fighting in the second half after being unable to break the tight play in the first forty five minutes. However, South Cave United were not switched on as a mistake in the first five minutes put the home team in front by slipping down the wing past the defence and lobbing the keeper. This gave Reckitts Reserves confidence and several more shots on goal followed but were saved by Chris Hodgkinson using a punch (and the splits!) to clear the ball. South Cave United fought back with a shot by Jack Hanson just going wide of the back post then a corner by Matt Simpson to Jack who passed the ball across goal, which was scrambled in by Courtney Tarbottom to bring the score to 1-1. Courtney played well after coming on as substitute to replace Pete Allison who was carrying a groin injury. More chances were to follow as Rob Mooney headed over the bar to deny Reckitts Reserves a second goal. At the other end David Tarbotton took a free kick after a hand ball on the edge of the box which curled towards goal and was saved by the keeper and out for a corner. A few minutes later after sustained pressure by South Cave United Kieran Barmby headed over the bar after a cross by Matt Simpson. Later Paul Rackham was fouled running into the penalty area and a free kick was given but David Tarbotton was unable to trouble the keeper. However the game was not over as on the hour Reckitts Reserves broke down the wing and got passed two defenders to slip the ball past the keeper at the near post in a lapse of concentration. Final Score 2-1 It was another good performance with all players giving one hundred percent. A particular mention should go to Paul Rowe who deservedly got Man of the Match with a good ninety minutes of effort in keeping their centre forward out of the game. Also to Matt Friend for the latest in tackling techniques called the 'tackle and roll' used when you do not get the ball the first time around, you roll over and try again, nice move. South Cave United deserved more out of the game but with this effort the results will come. It was a pleasure to watch. |
